Cub Nautical Day
Part of our yearly planning was to do a few more Saturday activities as a Pack. We started doing Rain Gutter Regattas last year, but wanted to expand upon it. We had intended it to be a weekend campout, but due to the weather, cut it down to just a one day event and made it all nautical themed.
Growing up on an island and being raised at a marina, working on boats since I was a kid, I created activities that would help meet requirements across various ranks as well as give some additional skills opportunities. My asst CM and I brought ropes to teach various knots as well as a cleat so I could teach how to properly tie off a boat. We did life jacket safety, HEAT (hypothermia combat), and general boating safety. I even had one of my dolphin tour captains come out and talk about careers on the water, different types of vessels and rules of the road.
Our event included activities such as coloring the nautical alphabet to spell their names as well as how to read nautical charts. I had two Navy veterans, one male and one female, come and talk about their experience. I tried really hard to get a Coast Guard representative, but never could connect with anyone.
