NOVA Coronavirus Bonus Patch Program
As the NOVA counselor and mentor for our Pack, I’m always on the lookout for additional opportunities I can add in to our achievements. Since we meet as a den, this makes it easier to help keep the program year round.
Given that our kids are now out of school for an undetermined amount of time, I had already sent requirements via message and email to my Webelos and NOVA den parents of things that could be done at home until we meet again. Then I saw a patch in the Cub Scout Volunteers Facebook group, and decided to build a short program that the Cubs can earn while we are apart. So, take what you like, or use it all.
NOVA Coronavirus Bonus Patch Program
1. Watch video about viruses and germs:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7D0eIsuZC3w
2. Watch video about Coronovirus by CDC:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-JbDMYmAQM
3. Do the “everything you touch” activity from Columbus.gov Public Health:
You need: White paper, crayons, and tape.
1. Have children draw and color pictures of small germs on paper. Make up your own germs or
print some from www.scrubclub.org.
2. Have children tape the pictures around the room on everything they touch over a 1/2 hour.
3. Look around at the room at the end of that time and talk about how they themselves pick-up
and spread germs like these to all of these things.
4. Read over page 17 and 23 and do the Handwashing Word Scramble, Word Search, and pledge from the CDC’s Teaching Children About Flu
5. Say the Scout Oath and Law while washing your hands.
6. Email your NOVA counselor with photos showing activities completed to earn the special patch.
Patch available from Advantage Emblem.NOVA Coronavirus – Public
Can other packs do this with you?
Absolutely! There is no restriction. I share these ideas so anyone can use them.
Love this! I think it will also help the kids feel like they have some control and understanding of what is going on in our world today.
Love this idea! How would you adapt it for scouts who have not yet earned rank?
Anyone can earn it. I set it up for my NOVA den as it is science related, but you can use this however you want in your pack/den.
